In eager anticipation of the China Long Drive Championship 2021 Finals, set to take place from January 13 to 15, we had the opportunity to talk with the winner of the 1st China Long Drive Championship, Wudi.
Mr. Wudi was very pleasant to talk to and was also very generous with his answers. We asked him about his future plans, aims and aspirations, but also about the ways he trains and prepares for his games.
Wudi is a 28 year old native Shenzhener, born 1993/8/12. Even though inspiration can come in many forms and most sportsmen usually have a number of personal reasons for choosing their career path, Wudi explained that his key motivator was his dad.
“When did you start playing golf? Why?”
“I was a teenager, a 15 year old boy when my golf journey started. I actually have to thank my father for it, because he was the one who took me to play golf for the first time.”
“Who do you look up to?”
“That’s an easy question to answer. Bryson DeChambeau.” To be as good as he can be and to perform to the best of his ability, Wudi has been working hard to enhance his skills.
“How do you prepare for your games? Do you have any habits, rituals?”
“ I practice my swing routine at a driving range every day. I also workout at least three times a week. “
“How do you feel after winning the Championship last year? Has it affected your career and how?”
“I was very happy to win the Championship, of course. I still am. It has given me so much motivation and drive to continue practicing. I’ve been training really hard to boost my performance for this year’s Championship. And yes, winning last year has definitely affected me, but it has also really put China on the map as a country where golfers can build a successful career.”
“Where do you see yourself in the future?”
“I will always be a long drive player, no change there. I will most definitely keep practicing and training, establishing some effective pre-game habits that will allow me to perform at my highest level. I want to be challenged by other Chinese long drive players and I would also like to challenge other Asian and world golfers. My goal is to play in a world long drive event in the future.”
“How do you feel about competing in ALDC 2022?”
“I look forward to it and am very excited! I hope I’ll achieve great results.”
“Any words of wisdom for young golfers at the beginning of their career?”
“Golf is a great sport. I don’t want to offer any words of wisdom to young golfers because I believe that everyone should choose their own path regardless of what others tell them, but what I would like to do is to invite and encourage new players to take part in the game and try making it better and better!”
